چکیده

Exercise during pregnancy is associated with improved health outcomes for both mother and baby, including a reduced risk of future obesity and susceptibility to chronic diseases. Overwhelming evidence demonstrates a protective effect of maternal exercise against fetal birth weight extremes, reducing the rates of both large- and small-for-gestational-age infants. It is speculated that this protective effect is mediated in part through exercise-induced regulation of maternal physiology and placental development and function. However, the specific mechanisms through which maternal exercise regulates these changes remain to be discovered. We hypothesize that myokines, a collection of peptides and cytokines secreted from contracting skeletal muscles during exercise, may be an important missing link in the story. Myokines are known to reduce inflammation, improve metabolism and enhance macronutrient transporter expression and activity in various tissues of nonpregnant individuals. Little research to date has focused on the specific roles of the myokine secretome in the context of pregnancy; however, it is likely that myokines secreted from exercising skeletal muscles may modulate the maternal milieu and directly impact the vital organ of pregnancy-the placenta. In the current review, data in strong support of this potential role of myokines will be presented, suggesting myokine secretion as a key mechanism through which maternal exercise optimizes fetal growth trajectories. It is clear that further research is warranted in this area, as knowledge of the biological roles of myokines in the context of pregnancy would better inform clinical recommendations for exercise during pregnancy and contribute to the development of important therapeutic interventions.

Generalized disruption of inherited genomic imprints leads to wide-ranging placental defects and dysregulated fetal growth.

Monoallelic expression of imprinted genes, including ones solely expressed in the placenta, is essential for normal placental development and fetal growth. To better understand the role of placental imprinting in placental development and fetal growth, we examined conceptuses developing in the absence of maternally derived DNA (cytosine-5-)-methyltransferase 1o (DNMT1o). Absence of DNMT1o resul...

The impact of COVID-19 during pregnancy on fetal brain development

The development of the brain as the most complex structure of the human body is a long process that begins in the third week of pregnancy and continues until adulthood and even until the end of life (1). Human brain myelination begins one to two months before birth in the visual system and eventually lasts until the age of two in other sensory systems and then the motor systems (4). Processes a...

The Placental Cell-Derived Exosomes as a Promising Predictive Biomarker of Preeclampsia in Symptomatic Pregnancies

Placenta is endocrine organ that regulate biological function of several maternal tissues and fetal organs by specific mechanisms of cell-to-cell cooperation, which is realized via exosomes’ secretion. Exosomes delivery some molecules, i.e. active proteins, pro-coagulants, growth factors, lipids, enzymes, micro-RNAs to target cells and induce autocrine / paracrine effects on vasculature and tro...

Isolating the role of elevated Phlda2 in asymmetric late fetal growth restriction in mice

Pleckstrin homology-like domain family A member 2 (PHLDA2) is a maternally expressed imprinted gene whose elevated expression has been linked to fetal growth restriction in a number of human studies. In mice, Phlda2 negatively regulates placental growth and limits the accumulation of placental glycogen. We previously reported that a three-copy transgene spanning the Phlda2 locus drove a fetal g...

Role of the placenta in fetal programming: underlying mechanisms and potential interventional approaches.

Adverse influences during fetal life alter the structure and function of distinct cells, organ systems or homoeostatic pathways, thereby 'programming' the individual for an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes in adult life. Fetal programming can be caused by a number of different perturbations in the maternal compartment, such as altered maternal nutrition and reduc...
